Signs The Car's Air Filters Are Too Clogged For Summer!

Summer is bearing down on Oklahoma just like any other hot day. What exacerbates the heat are a couple of dirty car air filters that can disrupt the HVAC and engine performance. One of the more serious ones is the engine air filter – it maintains a clean flow of air into the engine – and if it’s mucky, you are in for a long line of mechanical problems down the road!

To make it easier, The Key Online – OKC will discuss the signs that your engine air filter need to be changed and how doing so can help keep your car engine cool this summer.

When Do I Change It?

A wise way to start is to check your car’s manual to see when the manufacturer recommends you change your air filter. Depending on your vehicle’s make, this can be anywhere from every 15,000 to 50,000 miles.

If it’s been a while since you’ve changed your air filter or you’re unsure, these are the few signs to look out for:

1. Decreased fuel efficiency:

Your engine may have trouble breathing if your filter is clogged; if that happens, your engine will burn more gasoline to compensate for the lack of oxygen.

You need to change your air filter if you notice that your car’s engine is struggling or that you appear to be filling up your tank more frequently than normal.

2. Bad acceleration:

If you use your car frequently, you should know how it typically feels. The clogged engine air filter is probably to fault if you notice unexpected changes, such as sluggish performance when driving uphill or the car straining to achieve high speeds.

3. Odd engine noises:

Cars produce various noises, and you don’t need to be concerned about them.

However, if you hear your engine whining, roaring, or gasping for air, it’s likely due to a clogged air filter. Check your air filter if you notice any of these signs; if it looks dirty, it probably is and needs to be replaced.

4. Dirty exhaust and air filter:

Well. It’s a brainer that a car’s exhaust and air filter should be clear. A filter that is mostly white when it is new and clean may eventually turn darker as it collects dust and grime.

Notice your car’s exhaust is darker than usual or emitting an unusual odor? It could be due to a dusty or clogged air filter.

5. Smoke coming from engine:

It’s never a good indication if you see thick black smoke billowing from under the hood. That’s a sign that your air filter is clogged and needs to be replaced. Black smoke from the exhaust comes out when the engine’s air-fuel ratio is off.

A new engine air filter will help your engine run more efficiently and improve fuel economy. Change your air filter according to your car’s maintenance schedule or if you notice any warning signs.

If you have no idea how to change your air filter, don’t worry!
